Supporting our Local Restaurants AND Homeless Community

Read the Press Release

Dorothy-Day-House-LogoDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dorothy Day House Berkeley Community Resource Center (DDH BCRC) in the Veterans Memorial Building, at 1931 Center, is only able to provide to-go meals, so those served can maintain proper social distance.

And Downtown restaurants closed or doing only take-out/delivery have the capacity and need to produce meals for those in need.

The Downtown Berkeley Association (DBA) has negotiated with a number of restaurants to provide nutritious to-go meals at $10 or less for approximately 80-100 persons outside the DDH-BCRC. (The program will start with mid-day lunches and expand into other meals if successful and sufficient funding.)  If the restaurant does not have the delivery capability, DBA Ambassadors are happy to deliver the meals in our electric utility cart.

Please DONATE here online or by check to the Dorothy Day House - Double Helping Hands program.

If donating by CHECK, please make out check to “Dorothy Day House” with “Double Helping Hands” in for/memo field, and mail check to Dorothy Day House P.O. Box 12701, Berkeley CA 94712.

If donating ONLINE, please be sure to enter under Designation: “Double Helping Hands” so they know it is for this program!

Donation Instructions

Your donation is 100% tax-deductible, and 100% of your donation will go to fund to-go meals from downtown restaurants as part of this Double Helping Hands program at Dorothy Day House. No overhead charged by the DBA or DDH to administer this program. The Dorothy Day House’s Federal Tax ID Number is 94-3158511.

Also, if you are a Downtown restaurant, and interested in becoming part of the meal program, please contact Matthew Jervis to get added to the list.

We have initially fundraised $10,000, for 10 days of lunches for approximately 100 persons, with $5,000 from individual DBA board members, then matched by $5,000 from the Downtown Berkeley Association.

We need to raise $7,000 per week to continue lunches after the first 10 days, and $14,000 if we expand into breakfasts also.

So please consider a recurring donation for the duration of the pandemic.  For example:

  • $10 per week (or $40 per month) feeds one person lunch one day per week
  • $20 per week (or $80 per month) feeds one person breakfast & lunch one day per week
  • $70 per week (or $280 per month) feeds one person lunch all week long
  • $140 per week (or $560 per month) feeds one person breakfast & lunch all week long

Think of this as your daily or weekly take-out meal, helping our local restaurants AND also someone truly in need!
